Ci-Dms Dispensary Management System Saves Alpharma Time and Labour in Secure Pharmaceutical Dispensing
Alpharma, the leading multi-national manufacturer of solid dose generic medicines, has turned to CI Systems for its new electronic dispensing system. At Alpharma's Barnstaple plant in Devon, the Ci-DMS Dispensary Management system is providing totally secure control of pharmaceutical dispensing, meeting the company's high volume output and fast track turnaround needs. "This investment is saving the company time and unnecessary manual labour. It also provides us with complete traceability which is vital in the pharmaceutical industry," says Maurice Jeffrey, Bulk Production Manager at Alpharma.
Alpharma produces an impressive five billion tablets per annum and has a product portfolio of over 350 entries. The company selected CI Systems' Ci-DMS as it offers highly efficient and consistent dispensing of excipient and active materials in a secure data environment. It not only exchanges data with Alpharma's existing ERP system, but also provides full audit traceability of all materials, quantities used and batch issues.
Ci-DMS also signals when the dispensing booth is cleaned and has a check system in place for validation of scales and electronic signature. Importantly, the system does not need a manual check signature, thereby speeding up the dispensing system and cutting out the labour requirements associated with manual dispensing.
Ci-DMS is a highly configurable, standard dispensing system that can easily be configured to suit specific customer requirements. This was a key factor in ensuring a smooth installation that was completed on time and within budget. CI Systems provided a full project management service including training.

The Ci-DMS dispensing system has been designed to be compliant with the FDA requirement in terms of 21 CFR Part 11, whilst CI Systems as a company operates to GAMP 4 standards. These essential qualifications were fundamental to Alpharma's decision to choose the Salisbury based company as a partner for this major project.
